Throwing winning touchdown passes is always gratifying, but for Jarrius Adams on Dec. 3, lobbing the football also proved to be very lucrative. The University of Mississippi sophomore successfully threw 11 15-yard passes into a target to win the $100,000 Dr Pepper Tuition Giveaway scholarship. The 30-second throw-off against another finalist was televised live during halftime at the Wisconsin-Penn State Big 10 Conference championship.

‘Mr. Magazine’ on VIP List

Samir Husni, professor and Hederman lecturer in the Meek School of Journalism and New Media at the University of Mississippi, was named to Folio’s 2016 list of the top 100 “Most Important People in Magazine Media.” Known as “Mr. Magazine,” Husni said it’s a great honor that the industry he loves and serves through teaching and consulting recognizes him as the lone person on the list from outside the industry.

Top 10 Writer’s Haven

Less than a decade ago, the University of Mississippi was ranked as one of five “Up-and-Coming” Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing programs by The Atlantic magazine. The program is meeting expectations, with UM recently being named a “Top 10 University for Aspiring Writers” by CollegeMagazine.com.

Winners in the Classroom

University of Mississippi student-athletes were not only successful on the courts and fields this fall; they were also successful in the classroom. Rebel student-athletes posted the highest cumulative semester grade-point average in the university’s recorded history. Ole Miss also had its highest number of mid-year graduates, with 22 student-athletes completing their degree requirements, while more than 50 percent of student-athletes earned a 3.00 GPA or better. In total, 174 student-athletes were named to the Chancellor’s or Dean’s Honor Roll, with 25 student-athletes earning 4.00 GPAs for the fall semester.

15 Years of Excellence

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has renewed the National Center for Natural Products Research’s designation as a Center of Excellence in recognition of its work in botanical dietary supplement research. This is the 15th consecutive year the NCNPR has received this recognition.

Two University of Mississippi pharmacy students have won presidential scholarships from the National Community Pharmacists Association. Ashley Culbertson and Lily Van, both third-professional year students, are among only 25 students nationally who received the $2,000 awards.
